Herbivore. Diet of low lying bushes and shrubs.
Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous (150 – 145 million years ago).
Ancient tracks indicate that they lived in family herds, travelling and grazing together like sheep. Out of a clutch of 20 or 30 newly hatched Stegosaurus babies, the vast majority would immediately be gobbled up by predators, leaving just enough survivors to grow into adulthood and ensure the continuation of the species. The slow moving Stegosaurus had a short neck and small head containing a brain the size of a plumb. Its large, heavy body was covered with a ridge of bone plates which could be raised as a threat and were useful in regulating body temperature. It possessed many, tiny teeth which it used to graze on plants. Its vicious spiked tail could be used to club predators if threatened.
