CORYTHOSAURUS

Pronounced

 “ko-RITH-uh-SAWR-us”

Meaning

‘helmet lizard’

Habitat

Warm, moist climatic conditions in lowland areas, typically forests but might have occasionally wandered into swampy areas to feed.

Character

It was named after the helmets that were used by Greek soldiers around 2700 years ago! This dinosaur had an impressive bony crest on the top of its head It is not known if this crest was used for defence, to cool this dinosaur down or if it was used to attract a mate. One very interesting fact about the Corythosaurus crest, is that dinosaur’s nostrils rose up through this crest, possibly allowing it to smell things better than it ordinarily would have been able to do. Corythosaurus was about 9 metres long and weighed around 5 tonnes. It had a toothless beak and hundreds of cheek teeth within its mouth.

Diet

Herbivore. It lived off of plants non-flowering plants such as gingkoes, conifers/pines and cycads.  Most of its diet were twigs as proven by the many excellent fossilized stomach contents of this dinosaur that have been found throughout the years.

TIME PERIOD

Late Cretaceous (circa 75 million years ago)
